Today marked the 24th anniversary of my father’s death. He drowned while at sea. He was a good man and it seems like just yesterday we were sitting together having a cup of coffee.
I will never forget the Muhr Bird that swam up next to the boat at 12:15 am on April 4th, 1987. We were out on the back deck of my Dad’s 80′ shrimper the Frank and Maria. There were many birds that night as we were sorting many smelt from the very large tows of pink shrimp. They were always squawking for more fish to eat, but it was this one lonely bird swam up and started to scream at us. I thought it was odd, but by the next day it had become apparent that he was warning me of a pending disaster that was about to take place.
After learning of the news that my Dad and cousin both drowned after hitting the rocks, it was no surprise to hear that it was at 12:15 am.
Farewell my Father and Fair Winds and Full Sails… we miss you!
